There were almost too many layers on him and not enough on her. Luke wasn't the jealous or possessive type, so he could handle admiring from afar, but he could see just how much attention Jessica was getting. She was a beautiful woman in every sense. It was only her past that was ugly, no different than his. The past wasn't something that either of them seemed eager to discuss. Tonight they had the opportunity to dance more than around that subject.
Would Jessica Jones dance? He watched as she finally made her way in his direction then chuckled silently, complete with a drop of his head, as she motioned for him to turn and display his outfit. Luke did as asked with a hand over his midsection at the end and a small bow in jest. "Now it's your turn," he said through his smile.
He wanted to see first hand how easy it'd be to get her out of the dress later. The last thing Luke wanted was to rip the thing. Jessica looked incredible in it and he didn't want the outfit to be a one time use. She could have a dance with other guys but he planned on her saving the last dance for him.
--
If Jessica were being honest with herself, there was always too many layers with Luke and that didn't always apply to clothes. But yes, at this particular moment in time, there were too many layers on him but she thought the number of layers on her was just right. Especially when he was giving her the look that he was at the moment along with trying to play it cool. Not that she thought he was a jealous or possessive man but she knew what it could feel like to see someone you care about flirting with someone else.
She tried not to think about it or how she would feel if someone was paying him too much attention tonight. She already had plans on making sure she was his last dance and the one that he left with but she would give him space if he wanted it too.
But right now he was playing along by actually turning in a slow circle for her when she motioned for him too and she let out a low whistle in response to let him know she appreciated it as well as the view. Then, with a chuckle, she did a slow turn once she was standing right in front of him. "Like this?"
Luke clapped his hands, openly appreciating the show Jessica gave him. A smile remained since she wolf whistled at him. Then again, the smile had probably only increased with the whistle and he'd been grinning at first sight of her. It was more than nice that she broke attention away from all her admirers to interact with him.
"So did you want to actually dance or just pick at me for the funeral outfit the Fae set me up in?" he teased through a grin while closing the distance between them. Her shoes gave Jessica some height but he still towered over her. It gave him an even better view down her dress if he were the type to look. He might behind closed doors but not in public.
She deserved better than that.
He wasn't sure if she'd want his arm to walk around at his side or actually dance. It was possible Jessica wanted her space, Luke didn't let that notion evade him. They hadn't been announced together on arrival but he considered her his date until she indicated otherwise.
If there were other admirers, Jessica had all but forgotten about them at this point. There was a chance that she would go around later to check in with the few that she knew and talked to on a regular basis but she was more than happy to be talking to Luke at the moment. So much so that she didn't see a point in leaving his company anytime soon.
Of course, she did wrinkle her nose a little when he asked if she actually wanted to dance and slid a sideways glance towards the dance floor. "I'm not sure I really know how to dance to this shit."
Yep, there is good old Jessica with her pretty language. Not that she would apologize for it or the fact that she was kind of lying by saying that she didn't know how to dance like the people who were dancing right now. She had learned a little from Trish since Trish's bitch of a mother had wanted them to learn. Or, well, she had wanted Trish to learn but then Jess had gotten stuck being her partner a few times.
"Why don't we get a drink first?" She suggested, reaching to take his arm.
"Only because I can't say no to you in that dress," he quipped as Jessica took his arm. Luke kept her tucked in at his side a hand draped over where she held onto him. Anyone else would swear around him and they'd get called on their language but she had a pass that few did around him.
He led the way to the bar in the room. "Just say the word and we can practice a few steps. It's only right to dance at least a little in that gown. You'll be depriving all of mankind otherwise. The powers that be here really knew what they were doing," he concluded with a hungry smile toward Jessica as they neared the bar.
What she said made sense so Luke didn't press the subject of the club name further. Jones knew where he stood and that was all that mattered. The truth was that he was glad it wasn't something vulgar.
More truth was that she hadn't sworn as much as he expected her to be, especially somewhere that control was taken away. Yet he also wouldn't pretend to know how Jessica felt post Kilgrave. He could've been around to learn it first hand. It should've been as much as her decision as his to give her room. She could have called him but the same could be said about him. They already had that conversation before waking up in a new world.
He gave a small nod as she talked about her drink. "I meant your choice in alcohol these days, making friends and entrepreneurship. You own more than this spot." Luke wouldn't talk about the sex shop. Not directly. He acknowledged it indirectly just the way he was complimenting on what she was doing for herself in this other universe. "I like knowing where I can find you and not just because they've kept you behind bars. Pun intended."
She might elbow him for the dumb joke but it didn't stop him from grinning.
----
To be honest, there would have been a damn good chance of the name being vulgar if Jess had been left to handle it on her own. Except maybe not since she could be rather serious when it involved business, just as she had proven in the past.
As for the other things, she was still trying to figure out how she felt post-Kilgrave or even post dealing with the Hand. The whole being kidnapped and everything that had happened afterward had distracted her enough that she hadn't really taken a chance to face it all but there were times when she could feel it settling in her chest like a great weight slowly stealing her breath. But then she would simply drink or distract herself with a warm body. But having Luke there stirred up things that she didn't like to think about but, luckily, he proved to be a distraction as well.
But then he was pointing out how well she was doing and she wanted to laugh at the idea because she felt like it was completely the opposite of doing well. But then he was reminding her of her recent stint in the dungeon which definitely earned him an eye roll and a solid elbow in the ribs. "Don't lie, you liked knowing I couldn't get myself in trouble down there."
"Maybe," was all he admitted to on the spot. The teasing reply came with a slight shrug of shoulders but Luke didn't cease from the way his one arm wrapped around her. What had been a simple taking of the seat next to Jessica was now the two cuddled up on the furniture. He regretted nothing.
He kept any thought of Claire out of mind. It would be easy to justify that Luke had picked up where he'd left off with Jessica before the night nurse but that wasn't a fair statement. They hadn't exactly discussed life after Kilgrave. If left to the two, they might never have that discussion.
Luke leaned in with his face just enough to ghost outside of her ear. "I don't believe for a second that you couldn't get yourself into trouble down there," he quickly added, attempting to get Jessica to believe that was what his 'maybe' had been about. There was an impish smirk tugging his lips with eyes only catching sight of her in his peripheral.
Whatever she was thinking at that moment seemed to melt away at the feel of his face close to the side of her head which caused his warm breath to tease over her skin like a caress. There was also no stopping the tiniest shiver that rolled down her spine and seemed to rebound through the rest of her body, leaving her sitting there and blinking a little. Really, she had almost forgotten just how easily a touch from him could affect her or, at least, she had forgotten the intensity of it.
Glancing sideways at him in time to catch the impish smirk, she mentally kicked herself into focusing on the conversation even though she didn't want to. There were far more entertaining things they could do, right?
"Well, I could have definitely tried a few things but I thought I should behave." Saying that was probably enough to surprise him since Jess wasn't really known for trying to behave. Ever.
It seemed that they were always in tune with one another, regardless of Jessica being the initiator most times. Luke knew he instigated enough that they'd end up with no clothes on and in a panting mess. The Fae definitely got their money's worth from the two.
Luke was currently as bad off as she had just been in the moment. He no longer thought the conversation was about her time under lock and key but forced himself to think about it. "Looks like you got time off for good behavior. Or is that, good time with bad behavior? I'm not really sure."
The arm around her reached and took the drink glass out of her grip, freeing her hands so she could stop facing out to the crowd and face him instead. Luke held out the glass over the side of the furniture as his other hand reached for her side and pulled to turn Jones toward him. It had surprised him that she tried behaving. It turned him on.
Or maybe it was about that time already. They didn't spend a lot of time chit-chatting. Maybe in the face of adversity, sure. But there wasn't anyone trying to kill them or destroy the city at the moment.
